UCWEB: A Wap Browser for iPhone
July 5th, 2008
I’ve been waiting for an iphone edition WAP browser for a long time. Today i just happened to get it: UCWEB.
Of course it can do a lot of things, Nek has made a good summery for us here. Quote part here:
1. WEB and WML webpage browsing
2. WiFi, CMWAP(only in China), CMNET access
3. bookmarks
4. upload and download files
5. search
6. address
7….
For me, the most wonderfully thing is exactly what it’s designed to be: browsing wap sites on the iphone. I myself actually use Google Reader on Safari for the daily news, and Safari does work fine for me most of time, but in the worktime, i do need to visit some wap sites a little. That’s always been my headache when coming to it.
Now it’s come to the end, finally. Cheers
BTW, the source for UCWEB iphone edition is http://wap.ucweb.com/iphone/UCWEB.plist. And its offcial forum is here(in Chinese)
How To Get Yahoo Mail Working on the iPhone
July 1st, 2008
I’m not sure if it will work for you, but it does work for me. here’s the how-to step by step:
1. switch to the classic if you are in the new yahoo mail. pic below shows you where to find it.
2. Enable the pop support.
3. now add your yahoo mail account in the phone by Settings->Mail->Add Account->YMail.
I’ve also tested mail receiving and sending, both work well.
Failed again? Try yahoo pop. That is, add a pop account on the phone in which you use the following yahoo pop settings:
| Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: | plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com (Use SSL, port: 995) |
| Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: | plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com (Use SSL, port: 465, use authentication) |
| Account Name/Login Name: | Your Yahoo! Mail ID (your email address without the “@yahoo.com”) |
| Email Address: | Your Yahoo! Mail address (e.g., user@yahoo.com) |
| Password: | Your Yahoo! Mail password |
Still no luck? well, if you can do step 2, you may choose to let yahoo forward your ymail to one of your gmail accounts, here i assume you can be able to access gmail on the phone successfully.
Hopefully you can take use of one of the three work-arounds mentioned above to fix the ymail issue. Good luck.
iPhone 2G Prices Sky High in China
June 22nd, 2008
iPhone 2G(firmware 1.x): 8G, RMB4300($625); 16G,4800RMB($698). Source here(chinese,sorry)
it’s in Shanghai, China. Crazy, isn’t it?
You may wonder why that. Actually, it’s all about the iphone 3G.
The new 3G iPhone is priced $199/$299, which really makes the current sellers worry about the 2G iphone on hand. Imagine: who still wanna buy the 2G if they can get the 3G in such a price?!
As a result, the sellers stopped trying getting more phones to china. They wanna sell out all the 2G phones before they start to get 3G ones. For the end user, it means the number of iphones they can buy are becoming less and less.
Meanwhile, due to the uncertainty of 3G phone, like final price, unlock or not, people are more comfortable on the 2G now, at least they are sure of working here, not mention those tons of third party applications.
All in all, 2G phone prices much more than it deserves now. As to when it comes to a resonable one, perhaps after Jul.11, when everything about 3G is clear.
Wait and see.
SwirlyMMS v1.0 for $8
June 15th, 2008
SwirlyMMS v1.0 beta is finally out there.
It’s long-waited as it promises some big enhancements, like built-in MMS reader, sound and video mms support, mms email-like actions like reply and forward, and something more as well.
Just one more thing, if you wanna use it later on your phone, you have to pay for that. $8, that’s the price. Not free any more.
Well, That’s understood. Good work deserves more.
Keep good working and they’ll get a good luck.
BTW, this is a report from iResearch(chinese), by which you may know how big the MMS cake is.
iPhone Coming To China On July 22?
June 15th, 2008
Rumors are all around, in both English and Chinese.
I’m not sure but i guess the orginal source is from here(Chinese).

Well, in my view of point, it’s very reasonable. The New China Unicom does need a breakpoint to attract more people to use their service, esp. when they’re gonna push the testing and deployment of 3G WCDMA network as soon as they get the 3g license from the goverment which is for sure a-matter-of-time thing. iPhone 3G is just released at the right time by Apple, which has failed in the first talk with China Mobile in the iphone 1 stage.
Let’s wait and see then.
Chasing iPhone 2? Perhaps.
June 4th, 2008
iPhone 2 DOES has some new features which is really attractive to me, like native support to Chinese in Email and IME, like GPS, etc. Exchange support, not so much. I have no plan to use personal my iPhone to check those company emails.
Even though so far the 3-rd party apps cannot be allowed to be running, I’m pretty sure it’s a matter of time. I do have a strong belief on those very talented guys in the community like the iPhone Dev Team, even I have completely no idea of who they are, where they come from and how they look like.
Perhaps, I should start thinking of reselling my iPhone, just like everyone else. The best target is someone here in Beijing,China.
Actually my iPhone works pretty good in every functionality. No physical damage at all. If you decide to get it you will also have my full support in my convenient time. Software only, btw.
Make Wordpress Grey To Mourn Quake Victims
May 20th, 2008
The following is the how-to, which is IE only.
Add the following corlored code to your theme’s header.php, right after <header>. Mine looks like this:
<head profile=”http://gmpg.org/xfn/11“>
<style>
html { filter:gray }
</style>
Or just filter:grey; to your body definition part in the style.css, which has no effect on the looking of the sidebar.
Update(May.22,2008): back to normal now. Thanks for your understanding and patience.

iChinese: Help You To Learn Chinese On iPhone
May 2nd, 2008
I should say I’m very impressive on this native iphone teaching app iChinese, after some playing around. Why? because it has an easy-to-use UI, a very practical and considerable customization setting and finally a really good and robust implementation.
Now i wanna give you a close look step by step.
1.Installation
Add the developer’s site http://ichinese.de/repo to Installer’s source, then find and install iChinese from the Learning category. The most recent version is v1.0.2.
Now that the author has also submitted the app to ModMyiPhone source, you can also install it without adding the source manually. So does Cydia. Only one thing: now it’s v1.0.1, not v1.0.2.
I suggest you add the author’s site to your installer since that will get you the latest version.
Launch iChinese and you will enter the main interface as below (picture from iChinese official site).
2.Preparation
Before you start learning by clicking the button Learn with Trainer or Learn On Your Own on the main menu, you need first download the Chinese-English Dictionary(Demo), related Chinese Characters(Demo) and Lesson 1(to 4, if you want. I choose 1 to 2) from the Library interface. Here’s what you should get so far.
3.Learning
Ok, now let’s start. Click Learn With Trainer from the main interface to enter the Trainer, do as the pop-up says(picture left below), and see what your score is(right below). right, you are on your way now.
You may noticed that i’ve add 3 circles on the screenshots ablove. Reason? well, that’s why i say this app has a VERY PRACTICAL and CONSIDERATE customization setting here. ‘Coz all that can be set by yourself in the following Settings interface.
Don’t forget to tap the three balls one by one to check out what each exactly means to your training and scoring.
Well, the values shown in the picture has been changed by me. You decide yours. Basically by adjusting these values, you can decide how your training lessons will go and how hard the testing could be.
Talking about of this customization, I hope the author can put a Reset button here, by which i can restore all values to the default, esp. after all has been massed up before i completely understand the meaning of each. It would help a lot, i believe.
BTW, one more thing should be mentioned here: when you are asked to write Chinese characters, just write exactly stroke by stroke, in the right order. Never try to connect two or more strokes together or you will get a message saying ‘wrong number of strokes in character 1‘.
This is definitely good to the beginners. They need do good in the very beginning. And writing in the right stroke order is very very important in learning Chinese characters.
However, it sometimes may be frustrating, like in the following Lookup function, when I wanna find out what an unknown character really means.
But, perhaps, this kinda of use may beyond what iChinese is supposed to do. Well, fyi here
4.Lookup
Here you can find out the meaning of a Chinese character by stroke-writing , PinYin-input and English letter. Very easy to use, no more explanation needed, UI says all.
Last but not least, iChinese is a commercial software. The lessons and demo dictionaries are free, but if you wanna get more lessons and dictionaries, you have to pay for them. Details on the official site.
So, all in all, learning Chinese is not an easy task. But if you really wanna do it, a tool like iChinese would help a lot, esp. in the beginning phase.
For the author, if iChinese wanna meet well the need of those people who already learned a lot and will take iChinese more as an Chinese lookup dictionary than an learning application, you have to improve the hand-writing recognition part.
I’m just imagining an iChinese with a HWPen-similar input ![]()
