Say Goodbye To Firefox 2

December 28th, 2007

Yes, I really don wanna go back to firefox 2. But there are some add-ons i really need there. So what should i do?

After some googling i got this work-around today. I tried immediately by adding the boolean “extensions.checkCompatibility” with the value of “false”. Then restart my firefox.

You know what? Oops, it works! At least most of my favourite add-ons are working now, including del.icio.us, ABP, IE Tab, Foxyproxy, Search Status and Forecastfox. Then from now on I will stay at firefox 3 for sure, even it it’s still in beta. Tons of positive reviews plus my personal experience push me make the choice.

We all know in the end those add-ons will be definitely upgraded to be compatible with firefox 3. for now I just can’t wait.  How about you?:-)

Update(Feb.17,2008): if you are now in firefox 3 beta 3, just as i am, you may check out my new post here on how to make your favorite add-ons working there.

Rename Your iPhone

December 23rd, 2007

Everyone may know this how-to already, I guess, except me :-(   Actually I’m a little shame of myself ‘coz it’s about 3 months ago when i got my iphone.

I found the answer from one post from Apple Support.

Renaming is done by iTunes, other than iPhone itself. See the picture below and you’ll get it immediately.

rename iphone by iTunes

After renaming iTunes will automatically sync with the iPhone at once. And after that, you are done.

BTW, my iphone is ff 1.0.2 and iTunes is 7.3.0.54.

I’ve Got Friendly URLs Here!

December 23rd, 2007

I know it’s built-in feature in WP 2.3.1. However, due to i haven’t direct control on the server where my site is hosted in, this plan has to be postponed.

Until tonight i found this very valuable article. Exactly what i wannt: no loss to the traffic and smoothly upgrade to the more SEO-ed url pattern by redirecting.

Cool!

What iPhone Means For Me

December 22nd, 2007

First, of course, it’s mobile phone, by which I send/receive calls to/from my family, friends and others.

Second, it’s connection point, by which i do start to get to know someone that i never have a chance to know in real life. And that feels good. Actually, for those who for whatever reason just happens to be here, I’d like to know you. And if any info here can help, that would be great. If not, you just can leave a comment or email and i’ll talk to you later. Actually i’ve made some friends by online and offline contacts already :-) :-)

Third, it’s cool gadget, something like if you own it, you are standing at the frontier of the electronic age, even though i’m taught to be low-profile from the beginning. Actually i love new things and i salute to those who make new things that deserves a call of ‘a revolution product’ like Apple and Google.

There’s one setting in Google Reader called ‘Reformat lined web pages for mobile browsers.‘ which is VERY useful for me. And here’s the reasons:

google reader setting

1.Take Google Reader as a Proxy

By checking this option, I can read news from websites which provide feeds and are blocked in China, like *.blogspot.com. I do read news from Google Official Blog, actually.

2.Save Money When Connecting Via EDGE/GPRS

It’s true. And it’s done by decreasing the amount of downloading files while reformatting the web pages. See the following two pictures, left is orginal and right is the reformatted one:

googl reader - originalgoogle reader - reformatted for mobile

Yes, you can see the later layout is a mass. Actually that’s because the CSS file which controls how the webpage’s layout and display will be has not been downloaded to your mobile browser, say my iphone’s safari.

Furthermore, if there’s some flash ads in the original page, they won’t be downloaded, either.

In other words, the number of downloading bytes from the server to your browser is less than a normal page visit before reformatted. So, your monthly data usage is less and you cost less, too.

A greedy request here: Can Google Reader turn the reformatting option on when it detects the current net connection is via EDGE/GPRS while off via Wifi? You know, when cost is not a problem anymore, i’d love to see an CSS-based clean web page :-)

Expecting Firefox 3 Beta 2

December 18th, 2007

I myself has been trying firefox 3 beta 1 all the time since it’s released on Nov.19th. As to my experience, memory management has been improved a lot. I did try to keep the browser running the whole day and i did find it never took more than 100MB memory allocation. I’m pretty well satisfied.

Now beta 2 is around the corner. As said, easier to use, faster and less memory usage are the key improving aspects. Wow, just cann’t wait to try it out.

And guess I would not go back to Firefox 2, too, if those of my previously installed add-ons could be upgraded to work under Firefox 3.

Update(Nov 19th,2007): It’s released today. Get it by Help->Check for updates... in Firefox 3 Beta 1.

Rumor source here  :-)

D.Phone(迪信通) is one of the largest phone retailers here in beijing, even whole mainland. Actually my first mobile phone moto P7689 was bought there in Jan, 2001.

I think to make iphone available to china, at least the deal should cover several issues:

1.Official unlocked iphone.
Perhaps the same as the Germany/France version. Good news, anyway, isn’t it?

2.UI Localization
This may not be a big issue.
Actually even without the official one, an Chinese lang pack are already there by achan11.

3.App Localization
Like Chinese Input(I know you’ve already got iCosta or NativeCn working, but kinda hand-writing IME is still necessary), Phone Enhancement(CallID correctly recognition etc).

4.Hardware Localization
Perhaps, Wifi module has to been removed as required by Chinese goverment(sorry,it’s in Chinese).
But I wonder how many people still wanna buy such an iphone.

3. google’s new homepage for iphone.

very nice. the best part for me is google reader. Now i use it every day to read the news when i’m on the way to office or back home.

To be honest, actually considering the quality issue of the following to-be-public hacking tools based on it, i’m not one of those who’d love to make it open, even if i’m one of those who’s looking forward to the next anySim 1.1.3 miracle :-)

One of my friends has been asking me for a way of how to forward an individual SMS on iPhone. After some googling, I’ve got this: iphone-smsd.

The easiest installation is by Installer.app. Actually you can find it in Utilities->SMSD.

The UI is pretty straightforward, so give it a try.

Of course, if you just like it as I do, please join me to say thanks to the author.

Here’s what it looks like:

Update
: Forwarded Chinese SMS cannot be displayed correctly, guess it’s Unicode issue. And currently the author is working on it. Looking forward to v0.09.

Update: Currently the most up-to-date version 0.0.9 has fixed the above issue.
