GWT in iPhone is Blocked in China

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Not just in the Wifi network as shown in the screenshot left, same in CMCC’s cellular network. That’s why I guess it’s blocked by the  famous GFW.

And I don’t know exactly when GWT started becoming unavailable here in Beijing. I don’t know the reason either. Not mention when it will come back.

But I won’t leave Google Reader for that, since I’m addicting to the Buzz right now, who’s tightly integrated with Google Reader’s Share feature.

In the meantime, I’d like to trying some more native news client like NYTimes, Time Mobile and infzm(Chinese, App Store), ‘coz they can provide a better reading experience.

My Fix: Cydia’s Host Unreachable Error

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Cyida became unusable last week here in my case, just after I restored to the firmware 3.1.3. Whenever I tried to do some updates on it, I always got the error message of ‘Host Unreachable‘ and related blablabla. Even the official one apt.saurik.com is no luck. BTW, All this happened in my two Wifi avaiable spots: office and home(I didn’t try in the cellular network, ‘Coz I don wanna run the application that way).

The solution is actually easy, just remove those bad URLs who causes this errors. As to why even the offcial apt.saurik.com is reported as bad url(Manage->Add Source), please don’t ask me.

But how to remove?

In my case(just after a fresh restore), a USB solution is the only choice, either DiskAid or 91 Assisant Suite for iPhone, as far as I know.

I will not choose 91, because I know it will install its daemon on the device and that’s conflict with my power-saving principle(daemon as few as possible). Please help me to confirm that I’m right here, ‘Coz I assume DiskAid uses the already installed and running jailbreak demons which I’m not sure what it is and if it’s ok to toggle off.

OK, now please launch your DiskAid with iphone connected and check to clear up the following things:

/private/etc/apt/sources.list.d/
/private/var/lib/apt/lists/

Remove all the existed unavailable sources(lists and downloaded packages) accordingly. For me, I removed all(Make your decision here, please, since I just wanna a quick and dirty solution).

Now launch Cydia and manually add the sources you want. Here’s mine until now(see, the official one is deletable as well.Actually I did try some other sources, but all reported as bad.):

There maybe some cons that I haven’t realized yet, to my quick and dirty solution, so please share with me if you know more by the comments.

Anyway, I’ve got what I want(iCostaPY 3.0, Cycorder and 91进程管理) from Cydia, and I’m a happy Cydia user now.

Watch 2010 CCTV Spring Festival Gala on iPhone

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

As reported(Chinese),  people can watch the coming 2010 CCTV Spring Festival Gala on their iPhone by CNTV’s CCTV Mobile iPhone application, which I’ve talked before.  Screen shot above is captured at the time of writing.

Though the report did mentioned that Apple has agreed to give this application a big recommendation on its homepage(no clue on exactly which one, apple.com? apple.com.cn? AppStore or somewhere else?), at least until now I haven’t seen it on neither of them.

Anyway, if you are not be able to watch this traditional party show via TV or PC, perhaps you can give this application[iTunes Store] a try, though personally I’ve been spending less and less time on the gala year by year.

It’s Hard To Be A Chinese Netizen

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Yes, it is. How hard? you ask. Well, check it out now by taking a look at the picture below(I’m not the author, someone anonymous(but pretty creative) is).

Tons of thousands of websites and personal blogs have been shut down, no .cn domain names registration for the individuals any more, no Tor, no YouTube, no Facebook, no Twitter, blablabla. The rope around the Chinese netizen’s neck is becoming tighter and tighter.

Jordy sings ‘It’s hard to be a baby‘, well, a Chinese netizen as well.

Inspired by wikipedia’s List of digital distribution platforms for mobile devices, I’ve just created a similar but compact list for the Chinese native App Stores here. It’s far from complete and detailed, but it could give you an idea of how the success of Apple’s AppStore business has influenced the Chinese mobile market.

CCTV App for iPhone

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

[iTunes Store]

CCTV, the biggest video content owner of China and the state-owned tv station, has released its official free application for iPhone platform: CCTV National Mobile TV.

Built upon CCTV’s news, sports, entertainment, music, animation and other content, this product provides you with a brand-new experience of watching TV programs from China Central Television (CCTV).

I’ve tried it yesterday. My first try is in the morning and it’s a failture ‘coz all the videos cannot be played at all. However later in the evening when I tried again, the video played very smoothly. All that I can say is it’s not as stable as expected.

So far all the content are not live, but VoD. However, the news part are updated so frequently, which makes it almost ‘live’(almost as soon as it’s played on TV).

The videos are from 32 well-known columns covering 8 channels(CCTV 1~5,CCTV-7,CCTV-12 and CCTV-News) . Besides, there are also 9 topic-centered videos including Shanghai EXPO and 11th National Sports etc. As to the Top chart, it’s just another view of the 32 columns.

It’s not as good as expected, but better than nothing.

iCosta Updated to 1.2.8

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Title says all.

Source from the iCosta official blog(Chinese) here, which says the update fixed the bug of the iCosta’s easy crash when not-enough system memory left.

I myself did see a few crashes by icosta before, esp. in the SMS.app when I wanna reply and ready to type in the input box. That kinda crash really drove me crazy.

Hopefully it wouldn’t happen any more.

Update(Sep.17,2009): title modified based on the author says 1.2.8 also works on the latest 3.1 too.

Update(Sep.22,2009): the install source is http://iphone.freecoder.org/apt, fyi.

Update(Sep.28,2009): iCosta 1.2.8 works well on the latest iPhone firmware 3.1.

UCWeb 6.7beta Released: Support iPhone 3.x

Friday, September 4th, 2009

ucweb67

I’ve been waiting for it for a long time, really. I love it so.The reason? I’ve talked it before, not mention so many new features has been added in this release.

To quote a few, brand new UI design(i think it cooler), full screen browsing, support direct installation from .deb,.pxl,.ipa, support music(.3gp,.mp3) and movie(.mov,.mp4)) download and playback, last session restore…

I myself still haven’t enough time to digg deeper into it yet. To get more, you better try it out by yourself. Just give it some patience ‘coz it’s still in beta and buggy, from from as stable and user-friendly as Safari.

However, it IS worth of a try.

Cydia/Icy source is: http://wap.ucweb.com/iphone/cydia.

Compatible Firmwares: 2.0 | 2.0.1 | 2.0.2 | 2.1 | 2.2 | 2.2.1 | 3.0 | 3.0.1

Here’s the new home and a downloaded mp3 ready to play.

China Unicom: iPhone is Here,Finally

Friday, August 28th, 2009

News by Sina: 详讯:联通明日发布苹果iPhone手机事宜

It said China Unicom will announce the coming of iPhone tomorrow, i.e, Aug.28 of 2009. The exact date that customer can get the phone would be in someday of Oct. The model would be iPhone 3G 8G and 16G, while 3GS has been delayed until perhaps Oct. And the price would be lower than the unofficial price of related iPhone 3G which is currently 8G by 3000RMB(439USD) and 16G by 4000RMB(586USD).

It also mentioned China Unicom has spent 10 billion RMB(1.46 billion USD) to get 5 million iphones from Apple, who has given up the revenue-sharing-contract model in this deal.

Unfortunately the imported iPhone has been ‘customized’: No wifi module, no iTunes and App Store applications.

So the question is: would you buy it?
