weDict Dictionary on iPhone 2.0.1
August 12th, 2008
I’ve been successfully added the langdao-chinese-to-english dictionary manually to my iphone 2.0.1. and it works as expected. Here’s the screenshots,fyi.
The how-to? well, reader Daniel has put it in this comment. All same as before, except the target folder where the .dict and .idx files should be copied to, has been changed from ‘/var/root/Library/weDict/‘ to the new ‘/private/var/mobile/Applications/5AD48CB3-xxx/WeDict.app‘.
This post is just a proof based on my own testing.
Of couse, i assume you can use WinSCP without any question. If i’m wrong, you may get some info from that old post. Leave your comment if it’s nor working or anything is wrong.
Update(Aug,23,2008): Confirmed: this trick works on my updated 2.0.2 as well.
Use Books.app As A MMS Reader
March 23rd, 2008
Before SwirlyMMS offcially starts supporting MMS reading function, now you can take use of the Books.app as the a temp MMS reader. And here’s the how-to:
1.install both Books.app and SwirlyMMS from Installer.
Make sure both work well. You’d better download at least one book and one piece of MMS to check if they can func as expected. If you can’t, then you have to manually create the regarding folders.
2.enter command line by either Term-v100 on your iphone or Putty on your compute. You know how to do it, do you?
3.run the following command one by one(case sensitive):
cd /var/root/Media/EBooks
ln -s /var/mobile/Media/MMSFiles MMS
4.done.
So, now you can see basically the whole point is to fool the Books.app by a fake ‘book link’ which actually is where the MMS files are saved. One of the good thing is, now i can read Chinese MMS while i can’t in MobileText.app. Also, i can delete the obsolete MMS files easily by the Books.app’s Delete function.
So, SwirlyMMS.app + Books.app = A Full MMS.app, not bad, huh

Today’s Unlock Findings
March 16th, 2008
I just unlocked two iphones today, both of which are firmware 1.1.3 OTB, by iPlus2.0b(Download. btw, I removed the included br_kit.tar(for Brazil localization) from payload.zip before i run the iplus batch). So far everything is fine and all functions are working well.
In order to give the Chinese iphone unlockers a basic guide so that they can use their cool toy ASAP, I just made a unlock checklist here. Of course it’s also helpful for those who are not Chinese but still own an iphone and ready to unlock themselves.
One more thing, add http//www.trejan.com/irepo to your installer Source and then install Hardware Info, by which you can get a full report on your iphone’s h/w info, including modem, cpu, baseband etc. You can get more from the author’s site here.
Last but not least, NEVER EVER restore your 3.9FB iphone to firmware 1.1.1 or 1.1.0.’Coz doing so may bring a *strange* 3.8BL to your iphone which is not in the popular hackable software pool. Here’s the announcement from hackint0sh.
Receive MMS In Beijing By SwirlyMMS
March 2nd, 2008
Finally SwirlyMMS comes to the long-expected version 0.3, where MMS receiving is supposed to be done.
It’s said the new version should be available on Installer in 24 hrs. For people waiting it for such a long time like me, just can’t wait any more. So here’s how it works on my 1.1.3 iphone(soft-upgraded, i.e. 1.1.2 BB):
1.Uninstall the previous v0.2 and restart iphone(restart may not be necessary, but anyway, that’s what i did);
2.Add http://swirlyspace.com/SwirlySpace.xml into Installer’s source and refresh. You should see a new category called ‘SwirlySpace’ (If you can get the new version in your installer by update checking, then it’s not necessary to add this new source);
3.Enter this category and install it. At this moment it’s 0.3.1_1;
4.Power off and on iphone and launch SwirlyMMS(slide to the red bar and power off. Yes, that’s what the author says);
5.Config the settings like this( i’m a Chinese Mobile GoTone subscriber here in Beijing. Guess it should apply to those who also use China Mobile service and have a data package as well):
![]()
MMSC: mmsc.monternet.com
Proxy: 10.0.0.172
APN: cmwap
Username: cmwap (actually this was set by the app itself, according to the APN you’ve given)
6. Now you can try sending and receiving MMS now. Below is my testing result. In short, it WORKS!!

If SwirlyMMS says something like ‘EDGE is unvaible’ when you try to fetch MMS, just turn off your WiFi and try again. Don forget to give it couple of minutes. That’s my case, at least.
Only one little bug: the picture I received sizes 400×300 while it’s set as 300×400 in SwirlyMMS. I may try more and confirm this.
Anyway it works. and that’s the most important thing, isn’t it?
Update(Mar.3,2008): No luck on the most latest v0.3.2 any more. It keeps telling me that EDGE/GPRS is unavailable, which,actually, is not true for sure in my testing
Update(Mar.5,2008): v0.3.3 works like a charm now!! ![]()
iCosta 1.0.5 for 1.1.3 Released
February 27th, 2008
I just learned that iCosta 1.0.5 for iphone 1.1.3 has been released. Even though i already had iCosta 1.0.4 working on my iphone based on George’s great tips, I still prefer to update to the *official* version. So i just add the http://iphone.freecoder.orge/rep to my installer’s sources and install iCosta 1.0.5 PinYin from the Localization category. Then shut off and on iphone and it’s done.
You may see that i haven’t uninstall the existed iCosta 1.0.4 before i install the new version, I know George has mentioned this how-to in his post as well, but, you know, just wanna find out how robust it could be
After some small testing i should say iCosta 1.0.5 works fine for me until now. Since i don use Wubi(五笔), so the biggest improvement on 1.0.5 - adding the Wubi input method - does’t sound too much for me.
For now what I wanna most is the capability of entering a phase or sentense via PinYin, not just what it does now: one by one character input.
Actually i also know there’s a new Chinese input method called WeFit can meet my needs perfectly. and I’m gonna give it a try when the final version(now it’s in preview 6.1) is released soon. Below(WeFit PinYin) is exactly what i wanna most: phase input.

Install Addons on Firefox 3 Beta 3
February 13th, 2008
I just updated my firefox 3b2 to 3b3 this morning. After reading this review by MozillaLinks, guess you will do the same as i did
However, there’s problem coming: i can’t use my previous addons which i really rely on so much. After some googling I finally got this cool Nightly Tester Tools from here.
I installed it immediately. Then i went to ‘Tools’->’Add-ons’ dialog, find the ‘Nightly Tester Tools’ on ‘Extensions’ tab, Click ‘Options’ and navigate to ‘Add-ons’ to ‘Disable add-on compatibility checking’ and then restart firefox.
It’s time foryou to get all of your those favorite addons back now. Enjoy.
1.1.3 Now
February 11th, 2008
I followed George’s wonderful post here to make it done.
And after the soft-upgrade, again, with help from George on iCosta installation, and some 3rd-party app fixes, i should say my iphone is ready to go.
Besides, George has so many valuable posts there on his blog. So if you wanna do some iphone hackings like me, i strongly recommend to subscribe his blog and check often.
So for now, I have a fully functional(except Google Maps’ Locate me) iphone in firmware 1.1.3 and unlocked bb 04.02.13_G ![]()
Fix: Customize Doesn’t Work On 1.1.2
February 4th, 2008
If you are in iphone firmware 1.1.2 and wanna re-arrange the icons of springboard via Customize, you may find you can’t for now, ‘coz Customize will crash at the booting spicychicken screen. There’s a lot of bugs reporting this as well.
Actually it’s a permission issue, just set the executable’s permission to 4755 will fix it. You can make it either by WinSCP or other terminal client like Putty. As to the latter, here’s the command line:
chmod 4755 /Applications/Customize.app/Customize
If still failed, try a reset or reboot.

iPhone 1.1.3 H/W Unlocked!!
January 18th, 2008
Believe it or not, iPhone 1.1.3 firmware just released three days ago has been hardware unlocked!!
TOTALLY UNBELIVABLE!!
It’s said that unlocking process is very complicated, totally different from the software unlocking, and it’s not for normal users, so it won’t be open to the public.
However, there’s an old saying: if winter passed already, then spring is not far away, right? ![]()
